Out of medication over weekend? Here’s what to do

Sometimes life gets in the way, and you may realise you’ve run out of tablets on a Friday evening or over the weekend. If this happens, you still have options – even when it happens outside of GP working hours.

The first step to do is : NOT PANIC

  • Check with your pharmacy

Many pharmacies can provide an emergency supply of regular medication. They will need to check what you normally take and how much you need until you can get a prescription.
  • NHS 111

If your pharmacy cannot help, NHS 111 can advise you on where to get an emergency supply. This may involve attending a local pharmacy open over the weekend or, in some cases, an out-of-hours service.
  • Visit an urgent emergency centre

You may be able to get your medicine from an urgent treatment centre after a consultation.
  • Hospital A&E

This should only be used in an emergency, for example if missing your medication could cause you to become very unwell. Find your nearest A&E here.
  • For controlled drug (such as strong painkillers)

Pharmacies are more limited in what they can supply in an emergency. NHS 111 will be able to advise you on the best course of action if this applies to you.

To prevent running out of medicines again, please signup for NHS app here.

  • Set reminders on your phone or ask your pharmacy about automatic ordering services.
  • Always try to order your prescriptions 7 days in advance before you run out.
